Urban Heat Islands (UHI)

As part of The Climate in Our Hands – Climate Models guidebook, “Urban Heat Islands” (UHI) is an interactive lesson that helps students explore the phenomenon of urban heat islands and investigate adaptation strategies to reduce extreme heat in cities. Using a multimedia animation, students experiment with different cooling solutions and analyze their long-term effectiveness.

What is this activity about?

This lesson introduces students to the urban heat island effect, which causes cities to be significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to human activities and infrastructure. By modeling mitigation and adaptation strategies, students learn how urban planning and climate action can shape the future of city climates.

Students work in small groups to test climate mitigation strategies and attempt to keep global warming below 1.5°C by 2100.

They analyze the feasibility, costs, and ethical implications of different strategies.

Wrap-up Discussion (10 min): Students reflect on why systemic transformations are needed across multiple sectors to meet climate goals.

Session 2: Local Adaptation Strategies (1h30)

Understanding the UHI Effect (45 min):

Students conduct a brainstorming session on why cities are hotter than rural areas.

Using the animation, they test different urban adaptation solutions (e.g., green roofs, urban planning, cooling systems).

Evaluating Solutions for 2100 (45 min):

Students predict how their chosen solutions will perform in the future.

They identify maladaptations, such as cooling solutions that lose effectiveness due to climate change.

They assess the connection between urban heat mitigation and climate action goals.

Final Reflection (20 min):
